Who it is for

Operators and operators in training at industrial plants who are preparing for an Indiana Industrial Class C or Class D wastewater certification exam.

Format

Online, self-paced: 10 timed modules with the manual reading, worked examples and a short check after each module, plus the student manual to download.

What you will learn

Taught by Brad Musick. 10 modules. Examples are for training only.

  1. Rules, cards and industrial plant class (35 min)How the certificate term and renewal work, how an industrial plant is classified, who may be in responsible charge, and discharge monitoring reports compared with monthly monitoring reports.
  2. The industrial liquid train (45 min)Screens, grit, lagoons and ponds, activated sludge and digestion on industrial wastes, nutrient gaps, toxic slugs, and industry trains such as food, dairy and meat plants.
  3. Equalization, coagulation and jar testing (30 min)Why flow and load are leveled, coagulation compared with flocculation, polymer types, and jar testing a mixed industrial feed.
  4. Metals, chromium and cyanide (45 min)Metal precipitation compared with pH, chelants and complexed metals, hexavalent chromium reduction, cyanide destruction, and a sensible order of treatment for mixed metals.
  5. Oil, FOG and DAF (35 min)Free oil compared with emulsions, separators and dissolved air flotation, FOG in a biological plant, and troubleshooting.
  6. Filtration, membranes and other processes (30 min)Sand and pressure filters, ultrafiltration and membranes, air stripping, carbon, ion exchange and what each one removes.
  7. Pretreatment and pollution prevention (35 min)Why pretreatment exists, significant and categorical industrial users, slugs, pass-through and interference, chain of custody and spills, and pollution prevention.
  8. Solids handling (30 min)Thickening, stabilizing and dewatering, the rotary drum thickener, screw press and plate-and-frame press, and solids leaving the site, including hazardous waste testing.
  9. Laboratory and math (45 min)Samples, BOD and solids tests, pounds and population equivalent, SVI, membrane flux and TMP, DAF loading, demand and hypochlorite math.
  10. Safety and maintenance (15 min)An industrial plant is a chemical plant that also treats water: chemical hazards, pumps, strippers, corrosion and preventive maintenance.

What operators take away

  • A review of industrial treatment, pretreatment, solids, lab and math, in a sensible study order.
  • Operator math you have worked through yourself, step by step.
  • The meaning of the terms you will meet, such as RAS, WAS, SVI, demand and VA/ALK.
  • Worked industrial problems, such as classifying a shop and checking a metals clarifier.
  • Timed online modules with a short check after each one, a final quiz that opens when every check is passed and the study time is logged, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it.
  • A student manual to download (comes with the class).

After you pay, you are taken to a page where you start the online course and download the student manual. Work through the 10 modules in order; each ends with a 4-question check, and you need 3 of 4 to open the next module. The study timer counts time only while a module page is open and in front, and you have been active in the last 5 minutes. The final quiz opens after every check is passed and 5 hours 45 minutes of study are logged. It has 25 questions; you need 80 percent, with up to 3 attempts. After you pass and fill in a short course evaluation, you get a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ in the name you enroll with. Online access, including the course, manual, quiz, and certificate, lasts 90 days from purchase. To see the style of questions first, try a free practice quiz.
