Dewatering: Centrifuge, Belt Press and Screw Press
Solids separation, cake production, polymer and troubleshooting for the three main continuous dewatering machines.
Who it is for
Plant operators, biosolids staff, maintenance staff and supervisors who run or support dewatering equipment.
Format
Online, self-paced: 11 timed modules with the manual reading, worked examples and a short check after each module, plus the student manual to download.
Length and price
3 hours, $90.
What you will learn
Taught by Brad Musick. 11 modules. Worked examples use a fictional 8.0 MGD design plant.
- What dewatering does (10 min)Turning dilute sludge into a handleable cake, separating solids from liquid, controlling polymer cost and protecting downstream processes.
- A worked design example (15 min)An 8.0 MGD plant with two decanter centrifuges, its rated capacity, typical feed, cake solids and capture targets.
- Comparing the main technologies (20 min)Decanter centrifuge, belt filter press, screw press, plate-and-frame filter press and rotary drum thickener: how each works and what each is good at.
- Decanter centrifuge: functional sequence (15 min)Feed, separation by G-force, conveying by the scroll, clarifying and control.
- Belt filter press: functional sequence (15 min)Conditioning, the gravity zone, the wedge zone and the pressure zone.
- Screw press: functional sequence (15 min)Feed and floc, conveying, compressing, filtrate and discharge.
- Thickening and filter press: functional sequence (15 min)The rotary drum thickener (polymer conditioning, drum tumbling, filtrate through the screen, wash sprays) and the plate-and-frame press (fill, squeeze and hold, core blow, open and drop the cake, and why you never open it under pressure).
- Polymer math (20 min)Dry solids, active polymer, neat emulsion, volume and hourly feed, worked from design day numbers.
- Key operating levers (15 min)Polymer dose and mix, feed rate, differential speed and torque, and what each does to cake and capture.
- Troubleshooting (15 min)Centrifuge symptoms (wet cake, dirty centrate, high torque and vibration), and belt press and screw press problems such as tracking and blinded belts or screens.
- Safety, housekeeping and tools (10 min)Lockout and tagout, noise, slick floors and chemicals, plus a plant configuration sheet, polymer dose and capture and cake calculators and a daily dewatering log.
Free practice tool. Work through belt loading, capture and polymer dose with the free gravity belt thickener calculator.

What operators take away
- A clear picture of how the main thickening and dewatering machines work and how they differ.
- Polymer dose math you can check yourself.
- A list of the levers you can adjust and what each one does.
- Symptom-based troubleshooting for centrifuges, belt presses, screw presses and drum thickeners.
- Timed online modules with a short check after each one, a final quiz that opens when every check is passed and the study time is logged, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it.
- A student manual to download (comes with the class).

CEU approval for this class is pending with Indiana IDEM, and CEUs are not approved yet. If you need CEU credit, please wait to buy until we announce approval here.
Registration is open. Register online and start right away.
After you pay, you are taken to a page where you start the online course and download the student manual. Work through the 11 modules in order; each ends with a 4-question check, and you need 3 of 4 to open the next module. The study timer counts time only while a module page is open and in front, and you have been active in the last 5 minutes. The final quiz opens after every check is passed and 2 hours 45 minutes of study are logged. It has 15 questions; you need 80 percent, with up to 3 attempts. After you pass and fill in a short course evaluation, you get a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ in the name you enroll with. Online access, including the course, manual, quiz, and certificate, lasts 90 days from purchase. To see the style of questions first, try a free practice quiz.
