Disinfection Systems

Optimization, troubleshooting and process control for UV, chlorine and ozone disinfection.

Who it is for

Plant operators and supervisors who run or support effluent disinfection.

Format

Online, self-paced: 10 timed modules with the manual reading, worked examples and a short check after each module, plus the student manual to download.

Length and price

2 hours, $60.

What you will learn

Taught by Brad Musick. 10 modules. Examples are for training only.

  1. The disinfection barrier chain (10 min)Stable secondary treatment, hydraulic distribution, dose delivery, contact and verification, and why upstream solids matter.
  2. UV: reactor anatomy and functional sequence (10 min)Channel, lamp banks, sleeves, sensors and gates, and the steps from channel entry to disinfected effluent.
  3. UV lamps, sleeves and what the signals mean (10 min)Fouling, low intensity, low UVT, high TSS, high flow and bank alarms, and how clarifier upsets shield UV.
  4. UV troubleshooting and screening math (10 min)A troubleshooting tree for low dose, and flow conversion and theoretical time.
  5. Chlorination: contact basin and feed system (10 min)Contact basin hydraulics, the functional sequence, and the hypochlorite feed system.
  6. Dose, demand, residual and CT (15 min)Applied dose equals demand plus residual, with worked CT, chemical feed and pump calibration examples.
  7. Dechlorination and residual troubleshooting (10 min)Low chlorine residual, and high final residual after dechlorination.
  8. Ozone: generation, contact and off-gas (10 min)The three linked systems and the functional sequence.
  9. Operator math toolkit and peak flow (15 min)Pounds per day, detention, effective time, CT, pump output, tank days, log reduction and solution volume, and how peak flow changes the answer.
  10. Failed samples and the response sequence (10 min)A structure for a failed compliance sample, and the universal response sequence.

What operators take away

  • A clear view of how UV, chlorine and ozone systems work and fail.
  • Dose, CT and feed math you can check yourself.
  • Troubleshooting trees for low UV dose, low residual and high final residual.
  • A response sequence to use when a sample fails.
  • Timed online modules with a short check after each one, a final quiz that opens when every check is passed and the study time is logged, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it.
  • A student manual to download (comes with the class).

After you pay, you are taken to a page where you start the online course and download the student manual. Work through the 10 modules in order; each ends with a 4-question check, and you need 3 of 4 to open the next module. The study timer counts time only while a module page is open and in front, and you have been active in the last 5 minutes. The final quiz opens after every check is passed and 1 hour 50 minutes of study are logged. It has 15 questions; you need 80 percent, with up to 3 attempts. After you pass and fill in a short course evaluation, you get a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ in the name you enroll with. Online access, including the course, manual, quiz, and certificate, lasts 90 days from purchase. To see the style of questions first, try a free practice quiz.
