Anaerobic Digestion
Digestion biochemistry, pH buffering and biogas quality, commissioning a new digester with nitrogen purging, applied digester math and troubleshooting.
Who it is for
Municipal and industrial plant operators, solids handling operators and supervisors.
Format
Online, self-paced: 10 timed modules with the manual reading, worked examples and a short check after each module, plus the student manual to download.
Length and price
4 hours, $120.
What you will learn
Taught by Brad Musick. 10 modules. Examples come from the White River Resource Recovery Facility (WRRRF), a fictional training plant.
- The four stages and two populations (25 min)The anaerobic pathway from sludge to methane, and how digesters sour.
- Environmental requirements and pH buffering (20 min)Why pH is a late warning, how bicarbonate alkalinity, volatile acids and gas-phase CO2 control pH, and how to read the VA/ALK ratio.
- Biogas quality and digester gas safety (20 min)Methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and oxygen in biogas, plus temperature, mixing and inhibition.
- Commissioning a new digester: checks, filling and heating (20 min)Pre-commissioning checks, filling, and a worked example of heating the fill.
- Nitrogen purging (20 min)Why we purge with nitrogen, the purge procedure, dilution purge math, a worked example, and nitrogen safety.
- Seeding and feed ramp-up (15 min)Seeding the new digester, ramping up the feed, and deciding when the gas is good enough.
- Applied digester math (35 min)Sludge pounds, feed solids and volatile solids, VS loading and HRT, Van Kleeck volatile solids reduction, and gas production.
- VA/ALK, alkalinity addition and decision math (25 min)Calculating alkalinity additions, and decisions such as how much FOG a digester can take and whether gas is going missing.
- The daily digester routine (20 min)What to check, what to adjust, by how much, and how long to wait, including boiler and heat exchanger temperatures, gas meter flows, condensate traps and the flare pilot.
- Systematic troubleshooting and exercises (25 min)Guides for rising VA/ALK and souring, falling temperature, mixing loss with scum and grit, and oxygen in biogas or cover pressure. Exercises: a FOG slug, a boiler trip, ramp-up and lost volume. Foam, cover and relief valve safety, and using trend data as an early warning of souring, with the operator making the decision.

What operators take away
- The four stages of digestion and how to read VA/ALK before pH moves.
- A commissioning outline for a new digester, including nitrogen purging and seeding.
- Digester math you can check yourself: purge volumes, heating, seed volumes, feed ramp rates, VS loading, HRT, VS reduction and gas production.
- A daily digester routine and step-by-step guides for souring, temperature loss, mixing failure, low gas, foaming and gas safety alarms.
- Timed online modules with a short check after each one, a final quiz that opens when every check is passed and the study time is logged, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it.
- A student manual to download (comes with the class).

CEU approval for this class is pending with Indiana IDEM, and CEUs are not approved yet. If you need CEU credit, please wait to buy until we announce approval here.
Registration is open. Register online and start right away.
After you pay, you are taken to a page where you start the online course and download the student manual. Work through the 10 modules in order; each ends with a 4-question check, and you need 3 of 4 to open the next module. The study timer counts time only while a module page is open and in front, and you have been active in the last 5 minutes. The final quiz opens after every check is passed and 3 hours 45 minutes of study are logged. It has 20 questions; you need 80 percent, with up to 3 attempts. After you pass and fill in a short course evaluation, you get a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ in the name you enroll with. Online access, including the course, manual, quiz, and certificate, lasts 90 days from purchase. To see the style of questions first, try a free practice quiz.
