Indiana Class III and IV Certification

Study help for Indiana Class III and Class IV wastewater operator certification: rules, math, advanced process control, solids, lab and pretreatment.

Who it is for

Operators and operators in training who are preparing for an Indiana Class III or Class IV wastewater certification exam.

Format

Online, self-paced: 10 timed modules with the manual reading, worked examples and a short check after each module, plus the student manual to download.

Length and price

16 hours, $240.

What you will learn

Taught by Brad Musick. 10 modules. Examples come from the White River Resource Recovery Facility (WRRRF), a fictional training plant.

  1. Rules, reports and the license (60 min)How the operator certificate term and renewal work, how plant class follows design population equivalent, who may be in responsible charge, discharge monitoring reports compared with monthly operating reports, bypass reporting and records.
  2. Operator math (150 min)The pounds formula (8.34), population equivalent, loadings, SVI, F/M, sludge age and WAS from sludge age, membrane flux, demand and hypochlorite math, with careful step-by-step working.
  3. Preliminary and primary treatment (45 min)Screens, grit channels and velocity, flow measurement and what a primary clarifier should remove.
  4. Activated sludge process control (180 min)The three levers of air, RAS and WAS, SVI, wasting on purpose, setting RAS, selectors, step feed, foam types, the microscope as a control tool, and nitrification with alkalinity.
  5. Membrane bioreactors and moving bed reactors (90 min)How an MBR differs from conventional activated sludge, flux and transmembrane pressure, fouling and cleaning, recycle control, and how an MBBR with carriers compares with an MBR.
  6. Clarifiers, fixed film and tertiary filters (90 min)Clarifier parts and efficiency checks, trickling filter basics, and multimedia and cloth filters, including how you know a filter is dirty or clean.
  7. Disinfection (90 min)The gas chlorinator train, demand, residual and breakpoint, hypochlorite, UV, ozone and dechlorination, and what to control in each.
  8. Solids handling (120 min)Digestion process control, thickening and dewatering equipment, normal ranges and expected performance, and first actions when a process drifts.
  9. Laboratory, sampling and monitoring (50 min)Sampling points and methods, grab and composite samples, BOD and CBOD, solids tests, and recording the data you need to run the plant.
  10. Safety, maintenance and pretreatment (55 min)Gas and confined space hazards, pumps and air systems, and industrial pretreatment basics such as significant industrial users, slugs, chain of custody and spills.

What operators take away

  • A review of rules, math, process control, solids, lab, safety and more, in a sensible study order.
  • Operator math you have worked through yourself, step by step.
  • The meaning of the terms you will meet, such as RAS, WAS, SVI, demand and VA/ALK.
  • Two full plant problems to work through, one conventional and one with membranes.
  • Timed online modules with a short check after each one, a final quiz that opens when every check is passed and the study time is logged, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it.
  • A student manual to download (comes with the class).

CEU approval for this class is pending with Indiana IDEM, and CEUs are not approved yet. If you need CEU credit, please wait to buy until we announce approval here.

Registration is open. Register online and start right away.

After you pay, you are taken to a page where you start the online course and download the student manual. Work through the 10 modules in order; each ends with a 4-question check, and you need 3 of 4 to open the next module. The study timer counts time only while a module page is open and in front, and you have been active in the last 5 minutes. The final quiz opens after every check is passed and 15 hours 30 minutes of study are logged. It has 30 questions; you need 80 percent, with up to 3 attempts. After you pass and fill in a short course evaluation, you get a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ in the name you enroll with. Online access, including the course, manual, quiz, and certificate, lasts 90 days from purchase. To see the style of questions first, try a free practice quiz.
