Who it is for

Operators and operators in training who are preparing for an Indiana Class I or Class II wastewater certification exam.

Format

Online, self-paced: 10 timed modules with the manual reading, worked examples and a short check after each module, plus the student manual to download.

What you will learn

Taught by Brad Musick. 10 modules. Examples come from the White River Resource Recovery Facility (WRRRF), a fictional training plant.

  1. Rules, classification and reporting (60 min)How the operator certificate term and renewal work, how plant class follows design population equivalent, who may be in responsible charge, discharge monitoring reports compared with monthly operating reports, bypass reporting and records.
  2. Operator math (120 min)The pounds formula (8.34), population equivalent, percent removal, detention time, loadings, surface overflow and weir overflow, SVI, F/M and sludge age, with geometry and careful step-by-step working.
  3. Preliminary and primary treatment (45 min)Screens and comminutors, grit channels and velocity, and what a primary clarifier should remove.
  4. Activated sludge process control (120 min)Air, food and organisms, MLSS and MLVSS, RAS and WAS, wasting to a target age, SVI, conventional and extended aeration, rising sludge compared with bulking, and what to do first.
  5. Clarifiers (50 min)The feed well, blanket, weirs and sludge removal, loading checks, and why held sludge goes septic or rises.
  6. Fixed film and lagoons (60 min)Trickling filters and rotating biological contactors, lagoon and pond types, and their daily swings.
  7. Disinfection (60 min)The gas chlorinator train, demand, residual and breakpoint, contact time, hypochlorite math and chlorine safety.
  8. Solids handling (70 min)Thickening, aerobic and anaerobic digestion with VA/ALK, belt and screw presses, and the sidestreams that return to the plant.
  9. Laboratory (45 min)Grab and composite samples, BOD basics, TSS and volatile solids, pH, settleable solids compared with SVI, equipment and QA/QC.
  10. Safety, maintenance and Class II topics (60 min)Hydrogen sulfide, methane, confined space, lockout and tagout, pump and cross-connection basics, and for Class II an introduction to industrial pretreatment and advanced treatment.

What operators take away

  • A review of rules, math, process control, solids, lab, safety and more, in a sensible study order.
  • Operator math you have worked through yourself, step by step.
  • The meaning of the terms you will meet, such as RAS, WAS, SVI, demand and VA/ALK.
  • A full plant problem to work through at the end.
  • Timed online modules with a short check after each one, a final quiz that opens when every check is passed and the study time is logged, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it.
  • A student manual to download (comes with the class).

After you pay, you are taken to a page where you start the online course and download the student manual. Work through the 10 modules in order; each ends with a 4-question check, and you need 3 of 4 to open the next module. The study timer counts time only while a module page is open and in front, and you have been active in the last 5 minutes. The final quiz opens after every check is passed and 11 hours 30 minutes of study are logged. It has 25 questions; you need 80 percent, with up to 3 attempts. After you pass and fill in a short course evaluation, you get a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ in the name you enroll with. Online access, including the course, manual, quiz, and certificate, lasts 90 days from purchase. To see the style of questions first, try a free practice quiz.
