Centrifuge Operation

Operation, troubleshooting and applied math for decanter centrifuges.

Who it is for

Municipal and industrial plant operators, biosolids staff, maintenance staff and supervisors.

Format

Online, self-paced: 10 timed modules with the manual reading, worked examples and a short check after each module, plus the student manual to download.

Length and price

4 hours, $120.

What you will learn

10 modules. Examples come from the White River Resource Recovery Facility (WRRRF), a fictional training plant.

  1. The machine: parts and designs (30 min)The parts of a decanter centrifuge and what each does, and counter-current compared with co-current designs.
  2. G-force and differential speed (15 min)The essentials of G-force and differential speed, with a check of a rated machine.
  3. Normal operation: pre-start and startup (25 min)The pre-start checklist, the startup order (lube oil, main drive, backdrive, flush, polymer, feed ramp), and polymer system startup and set-point math.
  4. Stable operation, rounds and shutdown (20 min)Loading and run time, daily rounds and the hourly log sheet, shutdown and flush, and the emergency shutdown order.
  5. Reading the machine (20 min)What each indicator tells you: torque, differential, bowl speed, vibration, feed, polymer, centrate and cake.
  6. What happens when you change one thing (20 min)Pond depth, bowl speed, differential speed and torque control, feed rate and polymer dose, and how dose drifts when feed density changes.
  7. Polymer essentials and dose math (25 min)What polymer does, verifying dose from meters, and jar testing after a feed change.
  8. Mass balance math (25 min)The dewatering mass balance, capture on a normal day and on an upset day, dry solids throughput, cake production and hauling, and centrate return loads.
  9. Centrifuge math workshop (20 min)Worked examples with your own numbers: solids capture, cake solids and cake tons, polymer dose in pounds per dry ton, and dry solids throughput, checked against a quiz of practice problems.
  10. Adjustment playbook, troubleshooting and alarms (25 min)The adjustment playbook, guides for wet cake and dirty centrate and for high torque, vibration and polymer problems, alarm response, a hydraulic overload check, and whether more polymer is worth the cost.

See how it works

Animated cutaway of a decanter centrifuge bowl showing how the weir plate setting changes the pond depth. A deeper pond gives a clearer centrate and a wetter cake; a shallower pond gives a longer dry beach, a drier cake and a dirtier centrate. A readout shows the pond depth as a percent of the bowl radius and the dry beach length.

WRRRF dewatering mass balance for September 1, 2026, with 97.5% capture: feed of 95 gpm digested sludge at 2.83% solids (1,345 lb/hr) and 81.1 gph of 0.25% polymer solution (23.1 lb active per dry ton) enter centrifuge Unit 1 at 3,000 rpm. Cake leaves at 24.1% solids (1,312 lb/hr dry) and centrate of about 115 gpm with about 799 mg/L TSS returns to the headworks.

What operators take away

  • A pre-start, startup, rounds and shutdown routine for a decanter centrifuge.
  • The ability to read torque, differential, bowl speed, vibration, feed, polymer, centrate and cake indicators.
  • A one-change-at-a-time adjustment playbook for pond depth, bowl speed, differential, feed rate and polymer dose.
  • Math you can check yourself: G-force, loadings, solids capture, cake solids, polymer dose, throughput, cake and hauling, and centrate return loads.
  • Symptom-based troubleshooting guides and alarm response.
  • Timed online modules with a short check after each one, a final quiz that opens when every check is passed and the study time is logged, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it.
  • A student manual to download (comes with the class).

After you pay, you are taken to a page where you start the online course and download the student manual. Work through the 10 modules in order; each ends with a 4-question check, and you need 3 of 4 to open the next module. The study timer counts time only while a module page is open and in front, and you have been active in the last 5 minutes. The final quiz opens after every check is passed and 3 hours 45 minutes of study are logged. It has 20 questions; you need 80 percent, with up to 3 attempts. After you pass and fill in a short course evaluation, you get a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ in the name you enroll with. Online access, including the course, manual, quiz, and certificate, lasts 90 days from purchase. To see the style of questions first, try a free practice quiz.
