Water Math

Units and conversions, area and volume, flow and velocity, detention time, the pounds formula, solutions and dilution, pressure and pumping, filter, disinfection, well and records math.

CEUs not yet approved, for learning only

Who it is for

Water treatment and distribution operators preparing for exams or wanting a refresher, including operators who hold both water and wastewater licenses.

Format

Online, self-paced. Take it when it suits your shift.

Length and price

4 hours, $120.

What you will learn

10 modules. Worked examples use fictional drinking water systems.

  1. Math Survival Skills and Unit ConversionsA five step method for word problems, canceling units, the conversion factors every water operator uses, temperature conversion and rounding.
  2. Area and VolumeArea of rectangles and circles, volume of basins, tanks, standpipes and pipes, gallons per foot of pipe or casing, and using the 0.785 shortcut.
  3. Flow and VelocityQ = A x V, flow units, velocity in pipes and channels, flushing flow for a main, and checking a meter with a known volume.
  4. Detention Time, Overflow Rate and Weir LoadingDetention time in rapid mix, flocculation and settling basins, surface overflow rate, weir loading rate, and what each number tells the operator.
  5. The Pounds Formula and Chemical FeedThe pounds formula, feeding liquid chemicals by available strength, alum and alkalinity, caustic, fluoride with the available fluoride ion, and hypochlorite feed.
  6. Solutions, Percent Strength and DilutionPercent and mg/L, making a solution from dry chemical, diluting with C1 x V1 = C2 x V2, blending two strengths, and specific gravity.
  7. Pressure, Head and PumpingPressure and head, pressure from tank height, static and total dynamic head, water, brake and motor horsepower, efficiency and power cost.
  8. Filtration MathFilter area, loading rate with all filters and one out, unit filter run volume, backwash flow, volume and rise rate (see the Drinking Water Filters class for operation).
  9. Disinfection MathDose, demand and residual, chlorine from hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite, checking feed against flow, T10 and CT (see the Drinking Water Disinfection class).
  10. Well, Distribution and Records MathDrawdown and specific capacity, averages and maximums from daily records, percent removal, per capita use and water loss.

What operators take away

  • A simple method that works for every word problem.
  • The pounds formula and solution feed math with real plant numbers.
  • Pressure, head and pump horsepower in plain words.
  • Filter, CT and well math the way it shows up on exams.
  • A certification quiz for paid students, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it. The certificate does not carry CEU credit.
  • A student manual to download (comes with the class).
