Drinking Water Disinfection
A thorough, practical class on disinfecting drinking water: chlorine forms and safety, feed control, breakpoint, free and combined residual, chloramines, CT, UV, byproducts, DPD testing and troubleshooting.
CEUs not yet approved, for learning only
Who it is for
Water treatment and distribution operators at surface water and groundwater systems, including operators who hold both water and wastewater licenses.
Format
Online, self-paced. Take it when it suits your shift.
Length and price
4 hours, $120.
What you will learn
10 modules. Worked examples use fictional drinking water systems.
- Why We Disinfect and the Federal Residual ConceptsWaterborne germs, primary and secondary disinfection, the multiple barrier approach, and federal residual and disinfectant limit concepts (entry point, distribution, MRDL, Ground Water Rule).
- Chlorine Chemistry: HOCl, OCl- and pHWhat happens when chlorine gas or hypochlorite enters water, hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion, the effect of pH and temperature, and pH changes caused by each chlorine form.
- Breakpoint Chlorination and Free and Combined ResidualChlorine demand, reactions with iron, manganese, sulfide, organics and ammonia, combined chlorine, the breakpoint curve, the 7.6 to 1 ratio, and the Cedar Grove breakpoint dose.
- Chlorine Gas: Cylinders, Vacuum Feed and SafetyProperties and hazards of chlorine gas, 150 lb cylinders and ton containers, fusible plugs, withdrawal rates, vacuum regulators and ejectors, changing a cylinder, leak checks with ammonia and emergency kits.
- Hypochlorite and Tablet Feed, Feed Pumps and Dose ControlSodium hypochlorite strength, decay and chlorate, calcium hypochlorite and tablet feeders, metering pumps and calibration, flow pacing, compound loop control and residual analyzers.
- Chloramines and NitrificationWhy systems use chloramines, monochloramine formation, the 3 to 5 to 1 chlorine to ammonia ratio, pH, special customer notices, nitrification signs and control.
- CT and Inactivation CreditThe CT concept, T10 and baffling factors, using CT tables (temperature, pH, residual), the inactivation ratio, a worked White River example in summer and winter, and daily CT records.
- UV and Other DisinfectantsHow UV light inactivates germs, UV dose, UV doses for Cryptosporidium, Giardia and viruses, what affects UV performance, and brief notes on ozone and chlorine dioxide.
- Disinfection Byproducts and Residual TestingHow TTHM and HAA5 form, the Stage 1 and 2 rules and locational running annual averages, operational evaluation levels, ways to reduce byproducts, and DPD testing for free and total chlorine with common errors.
- Troubleshooting DisinfectionLow residual, taste and odor complaints, feed pump failure, and a step by step chlorine gas leak response, with a troubleshooting table and scenarios.
What operators take away
- Why pH decides how strong your chlorine really is.
- How to read a breakpoint curve and know whether you have free or combined chlorine.
- Safe handling and leak response for chlorine gas, and getting hypochlorite and tablet feeders to dose right.
- CT step by step with a baffling factor, using White River numbers.
- How to keep byproducts down and what to do when the residual drops.
- A certification quiz for paid students, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it. The certificate does not carry CEU credit.
- A student manual to download (comes with the class).
