Groundwater Treatment
How to treat well water at a small system: testing and choosing treatment, iron and manganese, aeration, pressure filters, sulfide and corrosion control, softening, arsenic and nitrate basics, disinfection and daily troubleshooting.
CEUs not yet approved, for learning only
Who it is for
Operators of small groundwater systems, including operators who hold both water and wastewater licenses.
Format
Online, self-paced: 10 timed modules with the manual reading, worked examples and a short check after each module, plus the student manual to download.
Length and price
2 hours, $60.
What you will learn
Taught by Brad Musick. 10 modules. Worked examples use fictional drinking water systems.
- Groundwater Systems and the Cedar Grove Wells (10 min)How groundwater differs from surface water, common groundwater problems, groundwater under the direct influence of surface water, and the Cedar Grove system.
- Groundwater Quality Testing and Choosing Treatment (10 min)The raw water tests every groundwater system needs, what each result means, comparing results with standards, and matching each problem to a treatment process.
- Hydrogen Sulfide, Carbon Dioxide and Corrosion Control (10 min)Where hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide come from, how pH controls whether they can be stripped, chlorine demand for sulfide, the effect of CO2 on pH, and basic corrosion control for lead and copper.
- Iron and Manganese: Problems and Chemistry (15 min)Why iron and manganese stain, secondary standards and the manganese health advisory, oxidation chemistry and oxidant demand for oxygen, chlorine and permanganate, and sequestering.
- Aeration (10 min)What aeration does and does not do, cascade, tray, forced draft and diffused aerators, the Cedar Grove aerator, and aerator problems.
- Pressure Filters and Iron and Manganese Removal (15 min)Oxidation plus filtration, manganese dioxide coated media and continuous regeneration, filter rate and backwash math, chlorine demand with ammonia, and filter checks.
- Hardness and Softening (10 min)What hardness is, calcium and magnesium as CaCO3, grains per gallon, carbonate and noncarbonate hardness, lime softening and ion exchange, and softener brine at the wastewater plant.
- Arsenic and Nitrate Basics (10 min)Arsenic and nitrate MCLs, health effects and sources, arsenic oxidation and removal with iron, adsorptive media, ion exchange and reverse osmosis, and nitrate treatment and blending.
- Disinfection of Groundwater Systems (10 min)Ground Water Rule concepts (sanitary surveys, triggered source monitoring, corrective action, 4 log virus treatment), residuals, CT in a storage tank, and hypochlorinator operation.
- Running the Plant: Daily Operation and Troubleshooting (10 min)The daily routine for a small groundwater treatment plant, checking chemical use against flow, handling backwash water, and a treatment troubleshooting table with scenarios.
What operators take away
- How to read a raw water analysis and match each problem to a treatment.
- Why iron and manganese stain, and how oxidation and filtration remove them.
- Chlorine demand math for a well with iron, manganese and ammonia.
- Softening, arsenic and nitrate basics in plain words.
- Timed online modules with a short check after each one, a final quiz that opens when every check is passed and the study time is logged, and a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ when you pass it. The certificate does not carry CEU credit.
- A student manual to download (comes with the class).

After you pay, you are taken to a page where you start the online course and download the student manual. Work through the 10 modules in order; each ends with a 4-question check, and you need 3 of 4 to open the next module. The study timer counts time only while a module page is open and in front, and you have been active in the last 5 minutes. The final quiz opens after every check is passed and 1 hour 50 minutes of study are logged. It has 15 questions; you need 80 percent, with up to 3 attempts. After you pass and fill in a short course evaluation, you get a certificate of completion from Wastewater Academy™ in the name you enroll with. Online access, including the course, manual, quiz, and certificate, lasts 90 days from purchase.
